Okavango Delta and the Moremi Game Reserve

The Okavango Delta is the largest inland delta in the world. Situated in the Moremi game reserve, this remarkable wetland lies like an oasis in the otherwise inhospitable Kalahari basin. Where land and delta meet, a mosaic of water-chanels, grasslands, forests and lagoons provide an extremely rich and diverse habitat for a multitude of birds and animals – including the elusive sitatunga antelope, large numbers of hippo, crocodiles, elephant and buffalo. Predators are particularly well represented, with lion, cheetah, leopard and the endangered wild-dog all present in large numbers.

The Okavango Delta is formed by millions of cubic metres of water flowing down the Kavango river from Angola into Botswana. Yet not a drop is destined to leave. Botswana is an incredibly flat country and on arriving at the boundary of the Kalahari desert, all gradient dissappears, causing the once substantial Kavango river to spread out into a myriad of lagoons, islands and papyrus lined waterways.

Holiday activities available in the Okavango vary considerably depending on the different terrain. Some lodges have water based activities (in motorised boats and wooden canoes) whilst others concentrate on game drives in open 4x4 vehicles.

Most visitors on safari in Botswana visit the Okavango Delta, and we recommend spending some time in areas where both dry-land game vewing and a wet-delta experience are possible. This can be done using a combination of camps, or there are some camps which can offer both types of activites from the same location. As the Okavango floodwaters rise and fall over the year, the range of activities at many of the camps changes considerably. As such it is always a good idea to check this before booking.
