Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, Luxury Safari Holidays in Botswana

The Makgadikgadi pans are the largest saltpans in the world, covering an area almost the size of Portugal. An area of wide open uninhabited spaces and endless horizons - the remoteness and inaccessibility of this desert environment gives it a magnetic allure.

But the Makgadikgadi is not always dry. In the wet season (December to April), the rains transform the pans into a huge sheet of water. These attract clouds of flamingos and water-birds and trigger dramatic migrations of wildebeest and zebra.

This migration comprises herds of wildebeest and zebra up to ten thousand strong and, for sheer size, is second only to the migration in the Serengeti. As well as the wildlife, this area offers an opportunity to walk with bushmen trackers, venture into the impenetrable pans on 4WD quad bikes and explore remote archaeological sites.
