Kenya Travel Update
It shocked the whole team to see Kenya making the headlines at the beginning of the year. However, since the formation of a coalition government in February, news coverage has died down and tourists are starting to return to this amazing country.
At Imagine Africa, we have been in regular contact with friends and partners in Kenya keeping up to date with how life is progressing. In February, President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga agreed to share power after negotiations led by Kofi Annan. In April the power-sharing government were sworn in and in the past few weeks they have been meeting behind closed doors at seminars designed to introduce issues of collective responsibility and ways to improve cohesion. And it's working ... in the past few weeks, the coalition government has successfully dealt with a number of tough decisions. This is extremely positive, proving that political opponents can work together and see things in the same way for the greater good of Kenya.
And throughout the past few months, it seems that investment in tourism has continued unabated with some wonderful new lodges opening. Saruni Samburu, a exciting new camp in Northern Kenya, opened a few weeks ago and has already generated considerable interest from our clients.
In fact, in terms of travel, many in the industry including the team at Imagine Africa, believe that there has never been a better year to visit Kenya. Tourism destinations within Kenya are safe to visit but are wonderfully free from hordes of tourists giving those that do visit the opportunity of having the beauty of Kenya all to themselves. On top of that, lodges including top-end luxury lodges such as Shompole, are offering fantastic deals to entice tourists back to one of the most famous safari countries in the world.
Over Easter, Naomi Campbell chose Malindi in Kenya for her beach holiday, “I feel quite safe. I didn't feel anything different from the way I have felt during my previous visits. There is tranquillity here. People should not shy away from visiting Kenya. Life in Kenya is natural and beautiful”.
Sir Richard Branson also returned to Kenya in May visiting the Masai Mara, "There has never been a better time to visit Kenya than right now! It is a fantastic time to come to Kenya and take a game drive as you will not see many people out there with you"
And our very own Belinda Whittall is currently sampling the delights of Kenya for the next two weeks - these working trips are tough!
