Malindi is a larger town about 20 minutes north of Watamu. One of the oldest coastal settlements in the country, it is an interesting mix of Swahili, Arabic, Italian and German culture – the latter two having arrived in the wake of a tourist boom similar to that south of Mombasa. The centre of Malindi still retains an African atmosphere but outside this it is very much an international holiday resort, principally Italian and German oriented.

Due to silt flow from the Galana River north of Malindi, we only recommend staying on Silversands beach which is far enough south to avoid this. Che-Shale Club is 20kms north of Malindi and also avoids this.

Watamu is a small beach resort about two hours drive north of Mombasa. Fronted by a string of idyllic beaches, Watamu used to be a quiet fishing village and whilst it still retains a tranquil atmosphere, it is now home to several well established holiday resorts and private coast houses. The coral reef here is spectacular and, protected by the Watamu Marine Park, it offers superb snorkeling and diving.
