Lake Turkana

Lake Turkana is the largest and most northern of the Rift Valley lakes. Covering an area of 7,500 sq kms, Turkana is also known as the Jade Sea on account of the ever changing colours of the water caused by green algae particles in the water. It is the largest desert lake in the world and is surrounded by barren volcanic lava beds, with little or no vegetation, which form a stark yet captivating landscape. The lake has some 60 fish species, including giant Nile perch and tiger fish, which offer attractive game fishing. The fish also provide a subsistence living for the Turkana, Rendille, Gabra and El Molo tribes-people who live around the lake.
