Lewa Downs is a private wildlife conservancy in the Laikipia area of northern Kenya. The two main lodges are Lewa Safari Camp, and Wilderness Trails. Both offer luxurious and homely holiday accommodation and wildlife densities as high as anywhere in Kenya. All of Africa’s ‘Big Five’ are present and the conservancy provides a refuge for several endangered species, including cheetah and rhino.

Wilderness Trails

Lewa Downs is owned by the Craig family and Wilderness Trails is their family home. Wilderness Trails accommodates guests in 8 comfortable thatched cottages with en-suite bathrooms and a large veranda.

Lewa is one of Africa’s conservation success stories and the game viewing here is excellent, with species including lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe and the elusive sitatunga. Wilderness Trails offer a wide range of safari activities, all customized to suit individual guests. Game drives, camel safaris, bush walks, staking out the leopard hide and visits to the nearby Samburu village are all possible. In camp there is a swimming pool, stables full of horses for guests to ride and clay tennis courts.

Lewa Safari Camp

Lewa Safari Camp used to be the head-quarters for the Rhino Sanctuary, and provides visitors with a fascinating insight into conservation and wildlife management at its best. The camp is hosted by Sean Hartley and his wife Judy-Anne, and has a relaxed and homely atmosphere. Run on a not-for-profit basis, guests are accommodated in 11 comfortable rooms with en-suite bathrooms, hot running water and flush toilets.

A visit to Lewa provides extraordinary game viewing, with wildlife densities as high as anywhere in Kenya, and Africa’s big five (leopard, lion, elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros) are all present. Holiday activities at Lewa Safari Camp include game drives, guided bush walks, and horse and camel safaris. Due to the personalised nature of a stay at Lewa, if you have any specific interests, (for example birding, archaeology, horse riding, big cat rehabilitation projects) your hosts will tailor make activities to focus on these areas.
