Only three and a half hour's drive from Nairobi in the heart of Kenya's Great Rift Valley, lies Lake Baringo - on the threshold of Kenya’s Northern Deserts. The orange-brown waters of the lake and dramatic rocky surroundings provide us with one of Kenya’s most stunning areas.

Robert's Camp is a beautiful lakeside campsite, also offering accommodation in bandas and family cottages. It is run by Ross and Caroline Withey, who have a special interest in the area due to Caroline’s own family history.

Baringo is also home to an unparalleled variety of birds, and some unusual wild creatures.

While you may not encounter all of Baringo’s 450 bird species, you’re likely to spot Verreaux’s Eagle Owls, Hammerkops, Storks, Hornbills, and Fish Eagles around the lake, while in the camp itself, you can spend many enjoyable hours identifying the colourful array of colourful Weavers, Starlings, and Sunbirds.

At night you can experience the thrill of seeing or hearing hippos, sometimes with young, grazing on the lawns and returning to the water by day.

Around the camp live a variety of smaller creatures, including genet cats, monitor lizards and tortoises - including their own 85-year old resident giant tortoise. The camp is safe for visitors, but guests are reminded that animals, especially hippos, should never be approached too closely, and special care must be taken after dark.
