Mozambique’s diving is both world class, and also very varied. Dolphins at Ponta D’Ouro in the south, the famous Whale Shark and Manta Ray diving at Inhambane, and the spectacular migration of the Humpback Whales from June to October – all contribute to make this some of the most compelling diving Africa has to offer.
OUR TOP 5 DIVING LODGES...
1. Vamizi Island Lodge
2. Nuarro Lodge
3. Medjumbe Lodge
4. Marlin Lodge
5. Barra Lodge

Also recommended: Baia Sonambula.

QUIRIMBAS ARCHIPELAGO
The Quirimbas Archipelago diving is notable specifically for the quality of the corals and the abundance of tropical fish. For the most part, the area has escaped the bleaching effect that has affected so much of the coral life around the world, the Indian Ocean included.

Find out what diving journalist and author Tim Ecott, writing in The Guardian said of the diving in the area around Vamizi...

Our top picks for diving in the Quirimbas are...
Nuarro Lodge - direct access to sea, very close to the continental shelf and plenty of undiscovered sites make this a perfect dive location. Offers a variety of shore dives on the wall and five pinnacles. Contact us for more information.

Vamizi - some of the dives here are said to be the best in the world. Neptune's Arm is situated on the edge of a spectacular drop-off - the wall starts at 10m and plunges dramatically to below 200m.

Medjumbe – second most northerly of the Quirimbas Islands, a gorgeous lodge perched on a tiny strip of sand, and surrounded by incredible variety of diving. Contact us for more information.

INHAMBANE PENINSULA
Diving in the Inhambane region around Barra and Tofo Beach is renowned for diving with Whale Shark and Manta Rays. The best season for diving with Whale Sharks is October to April, however chances of sightings outside this period are also very good.

Our top picks for diving at Inhambane are...
Barra Lodge & Flamingo Bay - sister properties at the top of the inhambane peninsula. All diving operated by the excellent Barra dive centre. Contact us for more information.

Baia Sonambula - great little owner run and managed luxury guest house in Tofo, that is an excellent base for the area, and its renowned whale shark diving. Contact us for more information.

BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO
This group of 5 islands is perhaps the best option for both leisure divers who also want to enjoy some of the Mozambique coasts famous ‘barefoot luxury’ beach lodges. The islands are a tropical paradise, and the diving in the area is just as good, with numerous sites that will suit all experience levels from beginner upwards.

All the properties in the Bazaruto Archipelago have PADI dive centres, so whether you are new to diving, or have 1000+ dives under your belt, you’ll be well looked after.

Some specific recommendations for diving in the Bazuruto Archipelago are...
Bazaruto Lodge – on the northern Bazaruto Island, closest to some of the key dive sites, and a simple yet excellent beach lodge. Much cheaper than many of the other properties in the Archipelago. Contact us for more information.

Indigo Bay Lodge – the other property on the larger Bazaruto Island. A resort style hotel with a fully equipped PADI centre. Will suite all divers – they have a special scuba training pool for beginners. Contact us for more information.

Benguerra Lodge, Marlin Lodge & Azura Retreat – all have fully equipped dive centres. Suitable for experienced divers and they also have ‘learn to dive’ packages for people wishing to get into diving for the first time.

VILANCULOS AREA
Most of the lodges on the mainland coast in and around Vilanculos also offer diving.

Vilanculos Beach Lodge and Nyati Beach Lodge both have in-house dive centres, whilst Casa Rex can arrange diving through an independent diving operation.

PONTA D’OURO DIVING
Ponta D’Ouro is well known for the resident dolphins in the area that visitors can arrange to swim with and learn more about via “Dolphin Encountours". However, there is very good diving available in the area too. The best place to stay is White Pearl Resorts which has a fully equipped diving set up.
