Founded by Vasco da Gama in 1534, Inhambane is one of the most atmospheric, relaxed and agreeable towns in Mozambique. The Inhambane Peninsula has several of the finest beaches in Mozambique, as well as excellent scuba diving off a number of offshore reefs. The most famous of which is known as Manta Reef, described as a ‘manta ray cleaning station’ where in addition to manta rays, you can also see turtles and various other reef fish. Chances of whale shark sightings are also particularly good in this area.

 

Accommodation options on the Inhambane Peninsula include:

Barra Lodge is situated amongst a grove of coconut trees overlooking a powder white beach and the turquoise Indian Ocean. Accommodation is in simple beach chalets, and an excellent range of watersports are offered including snorkelling, scuba diving, whale watching, yacht trips, fishing, horse riding and quad biking. Flamingo Bay Lodge has 20 luxury water chalets suspended on stilts on the landward side of the Inhambane peninsula. The chalets fan out in a large ‘S’ shape and are connected by a wooden walkway to a large central building which houses a bar, restaurant and swimming pool.
