Holidays in Maputo

Formerly known as Lourenço Marques, Mozambique’s capital Maputo is a fascinating city with much to delight the traveller by way of colourful markets and historical buildings. Set on a beautiful sheltered bay on the Indian Ocean Coast, Maputo is a vibrant mix of Arab, European and African cultures. Before the civil war of the 1970’s and 80’s Maputo was considered as beautiful as Cape Town and even Rio, and despite years of neglect over that period, the city has a faded elegance and charm and a vibrant, lively atmosphere.

A city tour of Maputo will reveal a train station built in the early 1900s by the same Eiffel who gave us the famous tower in Paris, the old fort & museum whose impressive ramparts and cannons once guarded the city, the Botanic Gardens, the National Art Museum, and the lively Municipal Market where fruit, vegetables, spices and basketwork are sold.
