The coastal town of Vilanculos lies on the Mozambique coast almost a thousand miles north of Maputo. With an international airport receiving daily flights from Johannesburg and the Kruger national park, Vilanculos is the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago. However, many people do not realise that Vilanculos also has a string of excellent beaches to its north and south.
The town has good restaurants and a great market, and there are several lodges in the surrounding area. The mix of western and local culture gives Vilanculos a vibrant and laid back holiday atmosphere and, with the Bazaruto Islands protecting the coastline from the big ocean swell, conditions are excellent for watersports and diving.
