North Island
The intent of this carefully coordinated ecotourism venture is to provide casual but luxurious accommodation that will not impact on the conservation project or the island’s delicate ecological balance. With only ten villas and a private lodge on the entire island, guest numbers are limited and privacy is one of the main attractions. It is one of the few places on Earth where giant tortoises outnumber the human population by two to one. Each villa is completely self-contained, with bedroom and indulgently large bathroom, a spacious living area with a wide wooden terrace and a pool. A completely private outdoor shower enables guests to bathe outdoors in the sunshine. Just metres away lies the Indian Ocean with its crystal clear waters and a wealth of wildlife. The dining areas and bar, health spa and organic gardens of the untouched forest complete this tropical paradise. There are trails for walking and cycling and guided walks focusing on the restoration process led by an ecologist. Other options include snorkelling and scuba diving, sea kayaking and fly fishing. Helicopter transfers must be arranged from Mahé. Prices
North Island is a beautifully remote island located about 15 minutes by helicopter from Mahé. Although only 2.5 km long by 1km wide, the island enjoys a variety of diverse habitats including three main golden beaches, dramatic granite outcrops, flat coastal plains and freshwater lakes. The island is the site of a conservation project that aims to restore and preserve this unique natural habitat and the surrounding coral reefs.
