Safari in South Africa

South Africa - the great 'rainbow' nation - is one of the most geographically varied countries of the African continent.  This magnificent country has three major geographical regions: the coastal belt running from Cape Town along the Garden Route and up to Kwazulu Natal in the northeast; the stunning Drakensberg Mountains that run unbroken for over a thousand kilometres; and the central plateau which is covered by rolling grasslands known as ‘highveld’.

There are also few better places to see Africa’s fantastic wildlife – South Africa has a staggering three hundred game reserves and national parks – the largest and best known of which is the mighty Kruger national park. Spread along the Mozambique border, it is home to the ‘big five’, as well as cheetah, giraffe, hippo, all sorts of antelope and many smaller animals. Malaria free game reserves in the Eastern Cape and Madikwe area also offer excellent wildlife viewing and are ideally suited to family holidays.

When To Go

South Africa is a year-round destination. The hottest months are November to March, and the coolest April to October.  The best time for game watching is August to October. The best time to visit Cape Town is during the summer (November to March). Self drive holidays along the garden route and in Kwa-Zulu Natal can be done throughout the year. Southern-Right whales can be seen off the east coasts from mid June to October, and humpback whales from August to December.

Visas

British and United States passport holders do not require a visa for travel to South Africa. Passports must however be valid for six months after the intended date of return, and must have at least two blank pages for the South African entry stamp.

Getting There

South Africa’s main international airports are in Johannesburg and Cape Town. There are frequent daily flights from the UK to both cities on British Airways, South African Airways, Virgin and Nationwide Airlines. Flying time is approximately eleven hours.

There are also regular flights between South Africa and Mauritius and the Seychelles – and South African Airways and Delta also have flights to the United States.
