There are three major geographical regions: the coastal belt running from Cape Town along the Garden Route and up to Kwazulu Natal in the northeast; the stunning Drakensberg Mountains that run unbroken for over a thousand kilometres.
The central plateau which is covered by rolling grasslands known as ‘highveld’. There are also few better places to see Africa's fantastic wildlife – South Africa has a staggering three hundred game reserves and national parks – the largest and best known of which is the mighty Kruger National Park.
Malaria free game reserves in the Eastern Cape and Madikwe area also offer excellent wildlife viewing and are ideally suited to family holidays.
South Africa is a year-round destination. The hottest months are November to March, and the coolest April to October. Self drive holidays along the garden route and in Kwa-Zulu Natal can be done throughout the year. Southern-Right whales can be seen off the east coasts from mid June to October, and humpback whales from August to December.
Getting There
