There are also few better places to see Africa's fantastic wildlife – South Africa has a staggering three hundred game reserves and national parks – the largest and best known of which is the mighty Kruger National Park. Malaria free game reserves in the Eastern Cape and Madikwe area also offer excellent wildlife viewing and are ideally suited to family holidays.
When To Go
South Africa is a year-round destination. The hottest months are November to March, and the coolest April to October. Self drive holidays along the garden route and in Kwa-Zulu Natal can be done throughout the year.
Southern-Right whales can be seen off the east coasts from mid June to October, and humpback whales from August to December.
Getting There
South Africa’s main international airports are in Johannesburg and Cape Town. There are frequent daily flights from the UK to both cities on British Airways, South African Airways and Virgin. Flying time is approximately eleven hours. There are also regular flights between South Africa and Mauritius and the Seychelles – and South African Airways and Delta also have flights to the United States.
