Holidays in Sudan
"Sudan is not a country, it is a continent", say the Sudanese. Sudan covers more than 2.5 million square kilometres making it the largest country in Africa - larger than Great Britain, France, Spain, Germany and Italy combined. Located directly to the south of Egypt, this vast country is also bordered by the Red Sea to the northeast, Ethiopia to the east and Kenya to the south.
With a population of 30 million and a land that stretches from the Sahara to the Red Sea and down to the uncharted swamps of the Sudd, Sudan is a diverse and fascinating country much of which remains unexplored making it an exciting holiday destination. Over two thousand years ago the ancient Egyptians knew Sudan as the 'Land of the Cush' - a source of ivory, incense, exotic spices and gold.
Such was the power and allure of its hidden treasures that for much of the intervening period Sudan has been the subject of invasion, exploration (most recently for oil), and conflict - including Africa's longest running civil war. In a historic peace agreement, the civil war, which took place in the southern Sudan (over 2,000 kilometres from Khartoum and northern Sudan), has recently come to an end. It will however be some time before travel to this part of Sudan is possible.
Imagine Africa's holiday tours to Sudan focus on Northern Sudan - one of Africa's most mysterious destinations. North of Khartoum the Nile river crosses the Sahara desert in a giant S-curve bending its way through many interesting and unspoilt archaeological sites of Egyptian and Meroitic civilizations which are still largely unknown to the public. Remarkably there are more pyramids in Sudan than in Egypt, as well as natural attractions that include the magnificent Western Desert, the Nubian Desert and the Nile Cataracts.
We offer a range of interesting itineraries, staying in the best accommodation in northern Sudan, and all run efficiently by the only incoming operator with offices in both Khartoum and Europe. Our representatives have been running tours and expeditions in northern Sudan for almost ten years and know all the most spectacular archaeological sites, desert landscapes and hidden Nubian villages and nomad settlements.
