Ancient Nubia - Camping Expedition

This 11 day camping expedition is led by an experienced tour guide using 4x4 landrovers and visits all the important archaeological sites. Each night camp is struck in a different location allowing you to explore some of the remoter parts of the desert. Camping is in dome tents (big enough to stand in) with foam mattresses. Groups usually consist of 6 – 14 persons.

 

ITINERARY
Day 1

Day flight London to Khartoum with Lufthansa. Overnight in Khartoum hotel.

Sudan
Day 2

Visit the Archaeological Museum in Khartoum before departing north to the ancient site of Naqa. The site includes the Temple of Apedemak and some 1st century wall engravings of Meroitic kings and gods. Overnight camping.

Day 3

Spend morning at the Elephant and Lion Temples at Musawwarat, before continuing to the Royal City of Meroe which as more than 50 pyramids. Camp near the pyramids.

Day 4

After visiting Meroe, cross the Nile at Atbara and head into the Bayuda Desert, where there is a good chance of meeting Bisharin nomads. Overnight in the desert.

Day 5

 Morning walking around the pyramids at Napata and the El Kurru Tombs. Afternoon arrive at Jebel Barkal to spend the night.

Day 6

Visit the pyramids and temples of Jebel Barkal, before driving north east to the 4th Cataract of the Nile. Overnight camping.

Days 7 & 8

Cross the Nubian Desert to visit the Christian Coptic Temple at Ol Dongola. The local villages in this area are beautiful, with houses hand painted with patterns and flowers. The people are very hospitable and readily welcome visitors. Overnight camping.

Day 9

Ferry across the Nile and journey into the Western Desert where you will encounter the Bisharin nomads. Overnight in the desert.

Desert Traffic!
Day 10

Drive south stopping at Omdurman to visit the tomb of the Mahdi (the Islamic leader of Sudan who fought General Gordon in 1885). Continue to Khartoum to overnight in a hotel.

Fly back to London.
