Sudan Travel Information

Camping at Meroe
Your tour leader

Our tour leaders are selected for their long experience in desert expeditions in Africa to ensure that your safari is enjoyable and successful. Our leaders are used to leading groups of different nationalities and are able to adapt the style of the tour to take into account the specific interests of the participants.

Small personalised groups

Groups for our desert expeditions usually consist of 6-14 passengers. For the full accommodated tours we can reach maximum of 18 passengers.

African conditions

Travelling in Africa is often unpredictable, and it must therefore be noted that the itineraries will depend on local conditions. The very nature of travelling in such remote areas means that there are often unforeseen challenges to overcome and participants should have a taste for adventure. These can be anything from: problems with road conditions, ferry-boats on the Nile being out of order, mechanical breakdown, or the weather – so please come prepared.

Desert Driving
Our vehicles

For a journey in the desert the quality of the vehicles is the most important aspect, because large parts of our itineraries are off road. We use Toyota Land Cruisers, Nissan Patrol 4x4’s or similar – which are assiduously maintained and specially equipped for desert travel; with long-range fuel tanks, extra water tanks, roof racks, spare parts, GPS navigation instruments, first aid kits, and satellite telephones. They are driven by experienced guides that know the ground conditions.

Equipment for camping expeditions

We provide spacious comfortable igloo tents (2.2 metres, x 2.2 metres x 1.7 metres high) which are designed for three persons, but used for a maximum of two people on our trips. They are very easy to set up (3 – 4 minutes), and are insect proof, with a built-in ground sheet for insulation as well as two large aerating windows with mosquito nets. Each passenger is provided with a thick foam mattress (5 cm thick). General camp equipment includes folding chairs with arms, folding tables, water basins and gas lighting.

Expedition lifestyle

Our camping expeditions are ‘semi-participation’ which means that you have to erect and dismantle your own tent. Of course our staff are on hand to help if required.

Geography

In geographical terms Sudan is like a huge wide bowl. Lush and tropical in the south, the land slopes down towards the Sahara desert in the north. The Nile river is the longest river in the world and is the Sudan's lifeline. Emerging from the humid southern forests, it flows northward through the enormous and uncharted Sudd swamps before reaching Khartoum. Khartoum is the capital of Sudan and together with nearby Omdurman, has a population of about 5 million. It is here that the two branches of the Blue Nile and White Nile join to form the main stream of the Nile, which flows north through the desert in a giant S-curve to Egypt.
