Mikumi National Park

Mikumi Elephant - Safari holiday

Mikumi forms the northern border of the Selous Game Reserve and has an interesting combination of flat acacia savannah, denser scrub and woodland. Among the larger mammals present are lion, giraffe, zebra, cheetah, elephant, wildebeest, eland and the imposing greater kudu. Mikumi has always been noted for its buffalo, which in terms of sheer size and number are the major species. Mikumi is also rich in bird life, with more than 400 species recorded in the park, although most of these are to be found in the less accessible woodland areas.

The park is bisected by a tarmac road (running from Dar es Salaam south to the Zambian border) – which is both a blessing and a blight. Its presence diminishes the sense of isolation, and in its vicinity, you can hear the passing traffic. But it does make the park one of the most accessible in the country. A less obvious benefit of the road is that many foreign visitors often overlook Mikumi because of it – so that those who do go can enjoy the park’s consistently impressive game viewing largely to themselves.
