Lake Manyara Serena

Sitting directly on the lip of the Rift Valley escarpment, Lake Manyara Serena Lodge has one of the most spectacular swimming pools in Africa. Sipping a cocktail from the poolside bar and watching the sun go down on the valley floor hundreds of metres below is a sensational way to finish a busy day on safari.

In the evenings paraffin lamps light the concrete pathways between the 50 guest rooms. These are built in circular thatched bungalows on either side of the central lodge area each with en suite toilet and shower and a private veranda.

The communal areas of the lodge have a pleasant atmosphere with lots of plants and open-sided walls that make the most of the awe-inspiring scenery.

There is also a shop with curios and books which may be useful for any last-minute guide book or camera battery purchases before you head into the Serengeti.

The food is of a good standard and the breakfasts are particularly impressive. Enormous spreads of fresh fruit, cereals, breads, porridge and traditional cooked food ensure that you never start the day on an empty stomach.

Lake Manyara Serena is also the regional base for the Serena Active programme which offers an exciting range of safari holiday activities including: guided canoeing safaris on Lake Manyara, camping safaris with over-night stays in exclusive bush ‘fly camps’, guided mountain biking along the Rift Valley escarpment and around the Lake Manyara national park, and wildlife walks with a Serena Active naturalist, concentrating specifically on birds and smaller flora and fauna.
