Safari Holidays in Tanzania
![]() |
Tanzania is a safari destination without peer. The world renowned Serengeti, the Ngorongoro Crater and the vast Selous - all names synonymous with some of the best game viewing experiences the continent has to offer.
Tanzania is East Africa's largest country and over a quarter of its surface area its taken up in national parks and game reserves which, collectively, harbour over 20% of Africa's large mammal population. During the great migration, it is also home to over a million migrating wildebeest and zebra - one of the most scintillating wildlife spectacles on the planet.
And yet there is much more to Tanzania than just safaris. In the north the snow-capped peaks of Africa's highest mountain - Kilimanjaro overlook the distant lake Victoria, the second largest freshwater lake in the world. And on the coast, Zanzibar and its sister islands of Mafia and Pemba are the highlights of an Indian Ocean coastline studded with beaches, stunning diving and mysterious ruins.
Holding the keys to Tanzania's treasure trove of natural riches are its ethnically diverse, relaxed and overwhelmingly friendly people. The country became independent from Britain in the early sixties to become the stable fully fledged democracy it is today. The population of about 40 million live mostly in the highlands around Kilimanjaro and the coast.

When To Go Tanzania is an all year round holiday destination. Generally the best times to go are between June and October and December to March. There are two wet seasons - April to May and November. The coastal strip is hot and humid all year round. Visas British passport holders require a visa for Tanzania. These cost GBP30 or USD50 and should preferably be arranged with the Tanzania High Commission in London before travel, although they can also be purchased on arrival.
