MAHALE LODGES

With magnificent forest clad peaks towering over 2,000 metres above the world's longest lake, Mahale Mountains national park is surely one of the most beautiful places in Africa. The park lies on the sandy shores of lake Tanganyika and, together with the smaller Gombe national park, it offers the best chimpanzee tracking in Africa.

There are well over a thousand chimpanzees in the Mahale, some of which are so habituated to humans that they may even brush past you as they groom, wrestle, feed and play.

With the nearest road over 100 kilometres away, the two safari lodges in the park have to be reached by boat or by air from Kigoma, which is the main town on the Tanzanian shores of the lake.

Greystoke Mahale is a stylish camp strung out along one of Lake Tanganyika's pristine palm-lined beaches. Nkungwe Camp is situated on an idyllic stretch of golden beach overlooked by the mighty Nkungwe mountain from which it gets its name. Eight tents are raised on wooden platforms overlooking the lake and there is a beach hut complete with cushioned lounge beds in which to recline after a hard days chimpanzee tracking. More...
