Nkungwe Camp

Nkungwe Camp is situated on an idyllic stretch of golden beach overlooked by the mighty Nkungwe mountain from which it gets its name. The eight tents are raised on wooden platforms overlooking the lake, and each has twin or double beds, a shower (with hot water),a flush toilet and a veranda with uninterrupted views of the lake and its breathtaking sunsets.

Nkungwe Camp tents are made of heavy-duty canvas material with ample space to relax and walk around. The tent is well ventilated with zip down gauze windows and roll up flap doors.

All the tents are facing Lake Tanganyika, and most of them are raised on wooden platforms to enhance the view.

The décor has been specifically chosen to give you the African Safari experience. Most of the décors were locally manufactured. 

The communal areas consist of a lounge, dining area, curio shop, library, and beach hut complete with chunky cushioned lounge beds.  

In the evenings, after a hard day’s climbing hills and tracking chimpanzees, a campfire is usually lit on the beach for guests to gather for drinks and a snack as the sun sets over the lake.

Meals at the camp are a sumptuous affair: breakfasts are English style with emphasis on tropical fruits and juices.

Lunches are usually light,evening meals are three courses. The specialty at Nkungwe Tented Camp is the Sangara, Kuhe, Mgebuka and Dagaa fish caught fresh from Lake Tanganyika by the local fishermen.

Guests are also served traditional African dishes such as Coconut Banana Meat Stew and Cassava chips.

The activities are centered around chimp trekking and chimpanzee safaris,nature walks in Mahale Mountains Park,fishing expedition outside the park boundaries ,and village and cultural visits to the nearby community.

More relaxed moments are spent enjoying a warm day on the Lake Tanganyika Beach.
