Both of these are renowned for chimpanzee tracking and have some magnificent forest scenery. Further south, the spectacular Katavi National Park is a remote and untouched wilderness harbouring some of the largest herds of big game left in Africa.

With magnificent forest clad peaks towering over 2,000 metres above the world's longest lake, Mahale Mountains National Park is surely one of the most beautiful places in Africa. The park lies on the sandy shores of lake Tanganyika and, together with the smaller Gombe national park, it offers the best chimpanzee tracking in Africa. More info on Mahale Mountains...

Gombe Stream National Park is located on the northern shores of Lake Tanganyika and measures only 52 sq km. It is Tanzania’s smallest park and its principal attractions are primates, particularly chimpanzees.

Brought to worldwide attention by the research of Jane Goodall in the late 1960s, Gombe has well over a hundred chimpanzees. Many of these are habituated to humans. This allows you to observe them at close quarters as they go about their business oblivious to your presence – providing one of the most rewarding wildlife experiences in the world. Katavi has prolific wildlife and some of the largest herds of plains game ever seen in Africa. This is because Katavi is in remote south western Tanzania - as far off the beaten track as it gets. Until recently you would find more people climbing Everest every year than visiting Katavi, and whilst visitor numbers have increased, visiting Katavi undoubtedly remains at the very pinnacle of safari experiences. Lake Tanganyika is the longest lake in the world, and at 1,433 metres is the second deepest in the world (Lake Baikal in Russia is the deepest, at 1,738m). At its lowest point, Lake Tanganyika is 642 metres below sea level. It holds a volume of water seven times that of Lake Victoria, and while it is 677km long from north to south, its average width is only 50km.

This is the epitomy of divers and anglers paradise, as it boasts over 350 species of fish, and some of the finest game fish in Africa, including goliath Tiger Fish and Nile Perch. You can even go body surfing on the 6 metre waves created after big storms. Avid snorkellers feasting their goggles on a dazzling array of tropical cichlid fish should keep an eye open for crocodiles.
