The Mountain Gorilla is close to extinction. There are thought to be about 600 left on the planet, and they only live in the forests on the volcanoes in this remote corner of the world.
Coming face to face with a mountain gorilla is one of the finest and most memorable wildlife experiences today. In groups of no more than 8 you visit the gorillas’ habitat and for one hour you spend time with these primates in their own environment. You are guaranteed to be blown away by their day to day antics and their likeness to humans. The Gorilla families that are tracked are semi-humanized and communicate with the guide showing their ease around humans, meaning that most groups come to within a few metres of our distant relations without any barriers. Thus creating an exciting once in a lifetime experience.
Tracking the gorillas through the thick Bwindi Impenetrable Forest can be a strenuous task, albeit in the end rewarding one. As the name suggests, there can be a lot of steep gradients to conquer through the dense undergrowth. Led by a park ranger the actual trek to the gorillas’ resting place can be several hours or it can be 30 minutes. We therefore suggest that people are relatively fit.
Ugandan gorilla permits cost $500pp and for conservation purposes only 24 are issued per day.
