Holidays to Victoria Falls in Southern Africa

Holidays to Victoria Falls

At over a mile wide and a hundred metres high - Victoria Falls is arguably the greatest waterfall in the world. Known locally as "Mosi-o-Tunya" - the smoke that thunders - they form a spectacular curtain of falling water double the height of the Niagara Falls. The falls lie on the Zambezi River which forms a natural boundary between Zimbabwe and Zambia, and have been declared a World Heritage Site.

The best way to see the falls 'up-close' on your holiday is to take one of the footpaths through the rainforest around the gorge. The massive volume of water roars as it plunges into the chasm of the gorge and continuously shrouding the paths in a fine spray - so take an anorak!

Victoria Falls
also has the deserved reputation as 'adventure capital' of southern Africa - and there are all sorts of exciting holiday adventures to be had (micro-lighting above the falls, rafting in the gorge below them, or bungee-ing into them). However, it should also be pointed out that there are plenty of less extreme holiday activities to be enjoyed. These include elephant walks, fishing, canoeing and sunset cruises on the calm upper reaches of the river

Getting There

The best way to get to Victoria Falls, is to fly via Johannesburg - from where many international carriers (British Airways, South African Airways, Virgin, Delta) offer flights to the UK and USA. The flight from Johannesburg to the Falls is about 2 hours. The Falls can also be reached by road (1.5 hours) from Chobe national park in northern Botswana.

Visas

The Falls can be visited from either Zambia or Zimbabwe and UK citizens require visas for both countries.

When To Go

The falls are spectacular throughout the year, but the water levels are at their highest in the first half of the year, and during this period the huge plumes of white spray rise half a mile up into the air - and can be seen from up to 50 miles away. From June onwards the water levels subside and whilst, the spray from the falls is not quite as impressive, the lower water levels allow for many more activities to take place.

General weather at Victoria Falls is the same as that of neighbouring Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The dry season is from May to October, when days are warm but not stifling. The rainy season runs from November to April, when daytime temperatures and humidity are both high.
