Zambia Safari Holidays
Zambia is famed for its magnificent waterfalls, wild rivers, fertile lakes and wetlands. Still relatively undiscovered by the tourist trade, Zambia’s parks are home to an abundance of wildlife and the country’s walking safaris and bush camping are legendary. Its safari areas are wild and untouched and it’s not uncommon not to see a single other person whilst enjoying Zambia’s unique safari experiences. The country is also home to the breathtaking Victoria Falls which it shares with its neighbour Zimbabwe and a wide range of adventure activities are available including white water rafting, bungee jumping and abseiling.
Zambia lies landlocked at the heart of Africa and is blessed with some of the most remote and unspoilt wildlife areas in Africa. Its main safari areas offer exceptional game viewing – and have a well established network of small safari lodges and bush camps (most of which are owner run) that offer an authentic ‘bush’ experience.
Diverse landscapes include the Luangwa valley where sightings of the big cats are among the best in Africa, the fertile valley ecosystem around the Lower Zambezi National Park and of course the mighty Victoria Falls, the largest waterfall in the world, where a wide range of activities are available including canoeing, white water rafting and lunching on Livingstone Island half way across the falls.
Walking Safaris
Walking safaris are a particular speciality in Zambia. Led by professional guides, walks can be anything from a few hours long up to ten day expeditions staying in remote bush camps. Most lodges in the Luangwa valley have satellite bush camps
specifically for use on walking safaris – which visitors have entirely to themselves.
When To Go
The best time for a safari in Zambia is the dry season from May to October. The green season from November to April is hot and humid and the bush is very green.
For Victoria Falls, the water levels are at their highest and therefore most impressive in the first half of the year, however lower water levels in the second half of the year are better for activities such as canoeing and white water rafting.
Flights
British Airways flies three times a week direct to the capital Lusaka. From here regular connections to Victoria Falls or the safari areas take about an hour. Alternatively there are daily flights to Victoria Falls or Lusaka, via Johannesburg. This is usually the best option if you are combining Zambia with another Southern Africa destination.
Visas
British and US citizens require a visa. These cost $140pp.
