Scuba Diving in Zanzibar, Pemba & Mafia

For diving enthusiasts, the coral reefs of Zanzibar and its archipelago of smaller islands provide an unforgettable underwater experience.

Zanzibar Diving

There are a number of diving operations, most of them on the north and east coasts. We recommend the following two establishments: www.rasnungwi.com/diving/ and www.matemwe.com/diving/index.htm.

Pemba Island Diving

The traditional villages on Pemba are primarily in the interior and have had little impact on the coast. Consequently the coral reefs around Pemba are largely in pristine condition and the Island is now listed as one of the top dive spots in East Africa, with dazzling coral gardens and a vast array of marine life. At present only the dive sites on the west and south coasts have been explored – so there are also exciting opportunities for exploratory diving. More information about diving on Pemba can be found at; www.fundulagoon.com/scubadiving.asp.

Mafia Island Diving

The nearby Rufiji River system makes the waters around Mafia particularly nutritional. As a result the reefs are especially brilliant with over 50 genera of coral, walls at various levels and many shelves and heads. As well as attracting over 400 fish species common to the Indian Ocean, the reefs are a meeting place for 5 turtle species and many larger oceanic fish – placing Mafia amongst the finest diving areas in the Indian Ocean.

The best months for diving are October to March, though for non-divers, the period between May and October will offer the best weather. There are six major dive sites and innumerable lesser sites, all excellent. Self-sufficient travellers can charter local dhows, but most of the diving is organized through the lodges. Popular dives include; the Kinasi Wall, Chole Wall, the Pinnacle, Kinasi Pass, Dinidini North Wall and Forbes Bay. More information about these can be found at; www.mafiaisland.com.
