Matemwe Bungalows

Set on a coral cliff overlooking a fine powder beach and distant coral reef, Matemwe Bungalows is a small and luxurious beach lodge. The recently upgraded lodge is tucked away on the northeast coast of Zanzibar and has a total of 12 bungalows, built from local materials and surrounded by beautiful garden. Each suite has a private veranda with hammocks and couches overlooking the Indian Ocean. Inside the room, you'll find a king-size bed, an extra single bed, plenty of space and personal touches. The bathrooms are large and have baths and walk-in showers. All rooms are equipped with a large mosquito net.

Lovingly maintained flowerbeds line the paths from the rooms to an open air restaurant which serves fresh Zanzibari and western cuisine all day and is as good as anywhere on this coast. The welcoming atmosphere is ideal for children: there are holiday activities aplenty and the bar keeps a good stock of beach and board games.

Holiday activities include sailing in traditional ngalawa outriggers, snorkeling, scuba diving and big-game fishing, as well as reef-walks, bicycle-hire with picnic lunches and visits to the local fish market. For those content to watch rather than take part, a great new beach bar has been built in the remnants of an old fishing dhow.
