Active safaris in Kenya - ballooning, horse riding, walking

Camel Safaris at Sabuk

Sabuk Lodge, which is in Laikipia area of northern Kenya, has over seventy camels and can arrange anything from three-hour long camel rides to five day camel expeditions.

 Sabuk Camel Safari

Camels offer an excellent vantage point for game viewing. Sat atop a camel you are over twelve feet off the ground, much higher than a 4x4 vehicle and, apart from the odd rumble from your camel’s stomach, quieter too.

Sabuk is in a remote part of Kenya, so visitors need to base themselves at Sabuk Lodge in order to go on camel safaris. There are no extra charges for camel safaris on top of the standard lodge costs - regardless of duration. Shorter rides can be arranged on arrival, but longer camping trips should be arranged before you travel.

Short rides.  A three hour ride would typically depart in the late afternoon with a Samburu guide and an armed ranger. After game viewing for a couple of hours the camel train halts at a suitable place for a ‘sun-downer’ (a glass or two of your favourite tipple accompanied by a delicious home made snack), before returning to the lodge in the last light.

Longer rides.  The rugged bush around Sabuk is also ideally suited to longer expeditions of anything up to five days. The camels are mounted with comfortable cradle seats and together with armed guides and Samburu trackers, days are spent game viewing on foot and camel back. A separate camel train will travel ahead to set up the evening camps. The mosquito proof tents have proper beds, bedside tables and en-suite dressing rooms with safari showers and chemical toilets. On clear evenings the tents can be put up without the outer fly-sheet so that the stars of the night sky are visible through the netting from your bed.

Tailor made expeditions of up to two weeks to the Mathews Range and other parts of Northern Kenya are also possible. For more information contact us.
